Description: | Standing male figure in clerical dress. Right arm outstretched, holding a book, left arm flexed with hand touching chest. Three books to rear of right foot. Relief panel on front of pedestal depicts Thomas Charles seated, finger raised, before a group of men, women and children who are holding books. Statue enclosed by iron railings on a low wall. Additional Information: Reverend Thomas Charles (1755-1814). Charles was a noted Calvinistic Methodist preacher and promoter of education in Wales. He was shocked by the ignorance of scriptures and trained groups of teachers to travel and remain in a locality for six to nine months at a time. Charles organised the weekly meetings of such schools on Sundays and ultimately 'placed the Welsh Sunday schools on a solid foundation'. Also influential in the improved supply and cost of Welsh bibles. Thomas Charles was the grandfather of Lewis Edward's wife Jane and of Edward's brother-in-law David Charles who founded the theological college in Bala with Edwards. | Subjects: | Statue | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Sculptor: Davies, William | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=6738... | Go to resource |
