Description: | Group of three stones in enclosure under shade of tree protected by modern railings. In the centre is a large limestone boulder flanked by two irregular vertical limestone rocks. In front of the large boulder are two incised slate tablets. Additional Information: The story of Gelert's Grave recounts how Prince Llywelyn's left his faithful guard dog, Gelert, to watch over his baby son while he went hunting. On his return he discovered the cradle empty and Gelert with blood-stained jaws. Thinking the dog had attacked his son, he drew his sword and killed the dog only to discover his child safe behind the cot with a wolf lying dead beside it. Filled with remorse, Llywelyn is supposed to have buried Gelert in this location. | Subjects: | Commemorative stone | Source: | Vads | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=6740... | Go to resource |
