Description: | Large standing stone on octagonal base surmounting a circular stone set on a grassy mound Additional Information: Llywelyn was the first and last native Welshman to be recognised by the English as Prince of Wales. He was the second son of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn and grandson of Llywelyn ap Iorwerth. Between 1256 and 1267 he experienced a period of almost unbroken military success. In 1258 the other native princes transferred their homage from the king to Lywelyn and in the same year he declared himself Prince of Wales. After a series of defeats by Edward I, Llywelyn joined with other Welsh leaders in a final uprising but whilst attempting a raid on an English garrison at Builth Castle, he was separated from his troops and killed in December 1282. Known as Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, 'Llywelyn the Last' or Llywelyn II. | Subjects: | Monolith | Source: | Vads | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=6776... | Go to resource |
