Description: | Wooden eagle in flight on top of a curving concrete pylon representing the airstream. The three ribs on the airstream represent the air corridors used in the airlift. The arch of the airstream represents the idea of an 'air bridge'. Additional Information: The sculpture commemorates the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49 when, for fifteen months, Royal Air Force, British civilian, Commonwealth and American airmen flew supplies into Berlin and carried refugees into West Germany after the blockading of West Berlin by the Soviet government. The blockade was lifted on 12th May 1949. Seventy airmen and eight German civilians were killed during the blockade and they are commemorated by this monument and the thirty-nine trees planted behind the work. | Subjects: | Sculpture | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Sculptor: Benson, Peter Sculptor: DeComyn, Andy | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=6815... | Go to resource |
