Description: | Statue of King George II in Roman soldier's dress, wearing a laurel wreath. He has sandalled feet and a cloak clasped on his right shoulder. He is standing with his left foot forward and his right hand across his body holding the top of a rod or sceptre. The bottom of the sceptre and the orb he holds in his left hand, are both resting on a broken plain classical column. The statue stands on a square pedestal with pronounced moulding at the top and bottom, and this stands on high base. The whole is set on a square of paving slabs. The pedestal has a flag in low relief in a recessed panel on the north side, and inscriptions on the other three sides. The flag has loops of cord attaching it to the flagpole, and a short inscription above and below. The flag is quartered - top left: three lions in a vertical row and a lion rampant to their right. Top right: three fleurs de lys. Bottom left: a harp with the upright as a female figurehead with acanthus(?) leaves as wings. Bottom right: a crown surrounded by four lions - one rampant with four hearts round it - a horse or donkey and two lions passant. In the deep recess formed by the statue's legs against the cloak, the marble of the statue can be seen although it has some very black staining on it. Right leg shows the contrast between the original surface and the present surface where the damage has taken its toll.
