Description: | A fresco-like decorative panel set under a broad, deep brick arch above church door. It is a complete semicircle except for the curved portion out of it in the centre over the door. Scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary are depicted in sgraffito form, incised outlines in a layer of plaster with blocks of colour over them extending beyond the outlines. The flesh of feet, hands and faces is pink. The style of the figures is reminiscent of Byzantine or early Italian frescoes. There are five groups of figures, from the left: The Annunciation with the Angel Gabriel in gold and the Virgin in blue. Mary telling Elizabeth of the forthcoming birth, both figures standing. Elizabeth is black and the Virgin is blue. (Central figure) a standing Madonna and child. The figure is now cement coloured with a pink line around it in the deep incision, but may have been blue originally. A group of four standing figures, two men, two women. The central figure is gold, probably Joseph holding the baby Jesus. Mary with Jesus in the Temple. Three elders seated on the left, in yellow, with Mary standing on the right and Jesus, as a boy, seated in front of her. He has a book or tablet on his knees. Both are blue. The background colour is pink/red. | Subjects: | Mural | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Lunn, Augustus Architect: Ford, Thomas F. | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=6995... | Go to resource |
