Description: | A plain rectangular bronze tablet, with a rounded cornice at the top. Above the inscription is a relief profile bust of Sir Joseph, looking right. The dark bronze of the tablet stands out well against the grey of the building's stonework at this busy road junction. Additional Information: Joseph Swan (1828-1914) was born in Sunderland and became famous for his experimental work with electrical and photographic processes. His inventions include artificial silk thread, the cellular lead plate battery and bromide printing paper for use in photography. He installed electric light in Lord Armstrong's home, Cragside, and in Newcastle's Mosely Street in 1881, the first street in the world to be lit by electricity.(1) Swan's factory at Benwell became the first commercial light bulb factory in the country.(2) | Subjects: | Panel | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Sculptor: Ray, Richard | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=7523... | Go to resource |
