Description: | Monument to Queen Victoria. Equestrian portrait statue on a polished pink granite pedestal inset with bronze ornament and four relief panels (See MRN: CE/030/2) Additional Information: Queen Victoria (1819 1901). Queen of the United Kingdom (1837-1901). Born at Kensington Palace, the only child of the Duke of Kent, fourth son of King George III, succeeded to the throne in 1837 on the death of her uncle, King William IV. The longest reigning monarch in British history, her reign, spanning the early years of the industrial revolution to the beginning of the technological age, saw the greatest advances and developments in the arts, medecine science, industry, manufacturing, and social and political change. In 1840 she married her cousin Albert, of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1819-1861) who took an active interest in all aspects of these developments. Her first son (born 1841) succeeded her as King Edward VII (1901-1910). She celebrated her fiftieth anniversary as Queen in 1887 (Golden Jubilee) and by the time she celebrated sixty years as Queen in 1897 (Diamond Jubilee) she was ruler of the largest empire ever seen.
