Description: | Signed: yes Description: In 1890 the poet and artist Paul Guigou wrote an essay about Monticelli. Guigou had been close to Monticelli during the artist's last years. Guigou's description of the artist gives us an insight into works such as Children Playing in a Park. Guigou describes how 'many times as we were walking together did I see him become ecstatic in the sight of a flower or a tree in sunlight!' Guigou continued, 'It seemed to me that the lyrical and magical fantasies of Monticelli were really inspired by things he saw and direct observation... Monticelli was a purely instinctive artist; he let himself be governed by his temperament, without reflecting beforehand and without seeking a particular direction.' | Subjects: | landscape; figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Monticelli, Adolphe Joseph Thomas (French painter, 1824-1886) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8294... | Go to resource |
