Description: | Signed: yes Description: The portrait was commissioned by one of Scotland's noble families to be displayed in their ancestral home at Yester House, East Lothian. The sitter is shown dressed in eastern fashion in his early twenties. The unusual clothing gave the portrait a timeless feeling which stopped it from becoming dated. Soest came to Britain from Germany shortly before the Restoration of 1660. Though a fine painter, he could not charge as much as his contemporary Lely. John Hay supported the revolution of 1689 and was a privy councillor under William and Mary. He was Lord Chancellor of Scotland 1705-6, supported union with England and was one of Scotland's 16 new peers in 1707. | Subjects: | figure; portrait | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Soest, Gerard (Dutch painter in England, ca.1600-1681) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8301... | Go to resource |
