Description: | This is one of two battle scenes at Wisbech attributed to the Haarlem-based painter Philips Wouwerman. It depicts a violent cavalry skirmish on hilly ground, near a town or fortification. As is usual in the work Wouwerman and his immediate followers, it appear to represent an imagined, generic battle, rather than an actual engagement. Wouwerman had many imitators and his work remained popular well into the eighteenth century, when his compositions provided a useful model for artists looking for ways to commemorate actual battles in paint, often on a much larger scale. | Subjects: | military and war; figure; animal (horse); landscape | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Wouwerman, Philips (Dutch painter, 1619-1668) Æ Attributed to circle of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8313... | Go to resource |
