Description: | This painting is probably by a Dutch or Flemish artist inspired by Adriaen Brouwer's depictions of peasants drinking in tavern interiors. Brouwer worked in both Flanders and the Netherlands during the seventeenth century, and specialised in paintings of low-life scenes. He was reputed to frequent such places and pay his bills with sketches. Such works should not, however, be considered as snap-shots of contemporary life. They appealed to the idea of the peasantry held by the rich patrons who bought Brouwer's paintings and the works of his Dutch and Flemish followers. | Subjects: | figure; everyday life | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Dutch School Æ Attributed to Attributed to Flemish School Previously attributed to Teniers, David, II (Flemish painter, 1610-1690) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8315... | Go to resource |
