Description: | Judging by the sitter's voluminous wig, informal dress and cravat, this portrait was probably produced around 1700. Although too late to be by the renowned Dutch portrait artist, Sir Peter Lely, (d. 1680), the painter was influenced by his images of Charles II's courtiers. The young gentleman is clearly a man of substance as shown by his luxurious clothes. His costly silk and velvet coat suggests he wanted to portray himself more as a rake, a young man with a taste for good living and beautiful things, rather than in a professional capacity such as a soldier or courtier. | Subjects: | portrait (male) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Lely, Peter (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1618-1680, active in England) Æ Attributed to circle of Previously attributed to Lely, Peter (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1618-1680, active in England) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8317... | Go to resource |
