Description: | This is a copy of the Garvagh Madonna in the National Gallery, London, painted about 1509-10 (NG744). It depicts an unusual scene in which the Infant John the Baptist accepts a carnation from the Christ Child, held by the Madonna. His acceptance of the carnation symbolises his acceptance of martyrdom, and his role as Christ's predecessor. The Garvagh Madonna was bought by the National Gallery in 1865, so it seems likely that this is a late nineteenth-century copy by a British artist. | Subjects: | religion (Madonna and child with St John) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Raphael (Italian painter and draftsman, 1483-1520) Æ After | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8321... | Go to resource |
