Description: | This anamorphic painting contains three views of saints: St Francis of Assisi wearing the habit of the Franciscan order and holding a tonsure and stigmata; St Francis de Paul, founder of the Franciscan Minorities or Brothers Minor holding a cartellino inscribed 'Charitas'; and St Peter, penitent and two tears on his cheek. These types of paintings were called 'perspective' or 'turning' pictures in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the work may be from either century. The painting is either from Spain or Naples as St Francis da Paola was an order of Franciscan monks from Paola near Naples. | Subjects: | figure; religion (St Francis of Assisi St Peter Penitent) St Francis de Paul | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Spanish School Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8333... | Go to resource |
