Description: | This painting shows Lucretia who took her life to avoid shaming her family after she was raped. It relates to a much imitated version by Guido Reni. The Leeds painting is unusual in that it shows the drapery falling away exposing her torso, a detail that links it to a French painting recently attributed to Vouet or circle of La Hyre. The flowers indicate an artist skilled in this genre, and may indicate a knowledge of the work of Pier Francesco Cittadini (d. 1661), one of Reni's Bolognese followers, who included similar flower arrangements in his figure paintings. | Subjects: | history (Lucretia); figure; still life | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Italian (Bolognese) School Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to school of Reni, Guido (Italian painter and draftsman, 1575-1642) Previously attributed to Allori, Cristofano (Italian painter, 1577-1621) Previously attributed to Reni, Guido (Italian painter and draftsman, 1575-1642) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8361... | Go to resource |
