Description: | The elderly subject of this portrait is Maria van Wassenaer Hanecops; her age is given as seventy. She is depicted in a fur-trimmed robe, wearing a white cap and a high ruff of a type which was still fashionable in the early seventeenth century when this portrait was painted. Michiel Jansz. van Miereveld, the artist responsible for this painting, was one of the best-known Dutch portrait painters of his day. He was appointed official court painter to the Prince of Orange-Nassau in 1607, and he ran a busy practice painting wealthy and fashionable Dutch citizens, as well as foreign visitors. | Subjects: | portrait (van Wassenaer Hanecops Maria) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Miereveld, Michiel Jansz. van (Dutch painter, 1567-1641) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8379... | Go to resource |
