Description: | Saint Mary Magdalene, holding her attribute of an ointment jar, stands in an arched niche. The strong contrapposto of her pose suggests the influence, if not necessarily the hand, of Gaudenzio Ferrari. The companion panel depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Marks left by hinges suggest that these once formed the wings of a triptych; the pose of the Magdalene suggests that this panel formed the right wing. Partial representations of the Angel Gabriel on the reverse of this panel, and of the Virgin Mary on its companion, indicate that when the triptych was closed these wings formed an Annunciation. | Subjects: | figure; religion (St Mary Magdalene) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ferrari, Gaudenzio (Italian painter and sculptor, ca.1470-1546) Æ Attributed to school of Previously attributed to school of Luini, Bernardino (Italian painter and draftsman, ca. 1480-ca. 1532) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8379... | Go to resource |
