Description: | Saint Catherine of Alexandria is shown reading a devotional book and holding a martyr's palm, with her symbol of the wheel behind. This work probably formed the left wing of a triptych, and its companion depicting Mary Magdalene formed the right wing. When closed, the wings of the triptych formed an Annunciation: on the reverse of this panel the Virgin is shown at an ornamental prie-dieu, her head turned as if her attention has been caught by a noise; the Angel Gabriel appears on the verso of the companion panel. These figures were probably painted by a different artist. | Subjects: | figure; religion (St Catherine of Alexandria) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ferrari, Gaudenzio (Italian painter and sculptor, ca.1470-1546) Æ Attributed to school of Previously attributed to school of Luini, Bernardino (Italian painter and draftsman, ca. 1480-ca. 1532) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8379... | Go to resource |
