Description: | Signed: yes Description: Ruisdael was one of the most influential landscape painters of all time and is well represented in all the great collections of Europe. His pupils included Meindert Hobbema (1638-1709) and he influenced the landscapes of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) and, later, the French Barbizon School. Christopher Wright argues that, of all the Dutch landscape painters, he was the only one to instill a moral and emotional content into his compositions. This composition is an important early work, based on Ruisdael's painting of 1647, River Landscape with a High Sandy Bank (Hage Collection, Denmark). Ruisdael used drawings of Rhenen on the Neder Rijn as the inspiration for the town in the distance. The church of St Cunera and the twin towers of Rhenen's water gate are clearly visible on the horizon. The figures are probably painted by another artist, possibly Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683) or Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668). | Subjects: | landscape | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ruisdael, Jacob van (Dutch painter and draftsman, born 1628 or 1629, died 1682) Æ Attributed to Berchem, Nicolaes (Dutch painter, printmaker, and draftsman, 1620-1683) Attributed to Wouwerman, Philips (Dutch painter, 1619-1668) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8383... | Go to resource |
