Description: | In this copy of van Somer's James I and VI, he wears the badge of the Order of the Knight of the Garter. Paul van Somer was born in Antwerp and worked in Holland before coming to England in 1616. From 1617 he was in royal employment and payments to him for royal portraits are recorded up to the time of his death in 1622. The prime version in the Royal Collection is dated 1618. The erroneous German inscription which identifies this painting as the Earl of Mar is later than the picture. | Subjects: | portrait (James I and VI) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Somer, Paulus van, I (Flemish painter and printmaker, 1576-1621) Æ After | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8386... | Go to resource |
