Description: | Signed: yes Description: Kate was a Dutch painter and printmaker. Like his contemporaries David Bles, A.H. Bakker Korff and Charles Rochussen, he favoured historical genre scenes, specialising in military subjects. Between 1837 and 1841 he was a pupil of Cornelis Kruseman; from 1840 to 1841 he travelled in Belgium, Germany, Italy and France. In Paris he took advice from Ernest Meissonier, who influenced his work. Most of the smoothly painted historical scenes for which ten Kate became famous feature soldiers in historical dress from the time of the Eighty Years War, for example Soldiers in a Guardroom (exh. Amsterdam, Rijksmus). They are often set in a tavern in the manner of David Teniers the younger. | Subjects: | everyday life (a tavern scene) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Kate, Herman Frederik Carel ten (Dutch artist, 1822-1891) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8396... | Go to resource |
