Description: | Signed: yes Description: Henri-Joseph Harpignies was born at Valenciennes. He did not take up painting until 1846 when he became a pupil of Jean-Alexis Anchard, remaining under his guidance until 1850. He continued his training in Italy from 1850 to 1852 and on his return he became associated with the Barbizon school of painters. In 1860 he returned to Italy with Corot. He made a further visit there from 1863 to 1865. Throughout his long career Harpignes concentrated on landscape painting. Initially influenced by Corot, he soon developed his own personal style. He treated open landscapes as well as forest scenes and recorded the effects of light in varied conditions ranging from full sunlight to moonlight. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1853, and unlike many of the other Barbizon painters, he excelled in watercolour exhibiting at the New Water Colour Society, London. His works were avidly collected in Britain during his life. In about 1879 Harpignes retired to his house La Trémellerie at Saint-Privé on the banks of the River Yonne. The Southampton painting was produced there in 1886. It shows an open view across fields. In the distance on the right a herd of cows are visible advancing into the foreground, while on the left a woman with four children watches the scene. A bend in the river, partly obscured by trees and bushes, is visible beyond them. The painting successfully captures the glow of warm evening light. The technique Harpignes used to describe the foreground and the trees on the left recalls the soft feathery' technique of Corot's late style, while the fresh, realistic treatment of the expanse of fields and hedges recall early impressionistic landscapes such as those of Constable whose works were highly appreciated in France at the time. | Subjects: | France) landscape; figure; place (Saint-Privé Yonne | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Harpignies, Henri-Joseph (French painter and printmaker, 1819-1916) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8404... | Go to resource |
