Description: | Painted in a monochrome sepia coloured wash, this work has been attributed to Salvator Rosa. However, from the style it is also believed that it may be by an eighteenth-century Flemish hand, painted in a late sixteenth century Venetian style. On the right, Pilate washes his hands as a pitcher of water is poured for him, while Christ is marched out of the door on the left by soldiers. In this symbolic act, Pilate demonstrates his disassociation from Christ's crucifixion, as He is handed over to the mob who have demanded His death. | Subjects: | religion (Pilate); figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Rosa, Salvator (Italian painter and engraver, 1615-1673) Æ Attributed to manner of Attributed to Flemish School Previously attributed to Rosa, Salvator (Italian painter and engraver, 1615-1673) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8411... | Go to resource |
