Description: | Signed: yes Description: In this work the Italian artist G. Lodi depicts two boys fighting. Since the work of the Dutch seventeenth-century artists Adriaen Brouwer, and van Ostade, this genre subject was a popular motif, and often treated in a humorous manner. The activity of fighting was seen as base, and in the seventeenth century in Holland was depicted to comment on the degenerate behaviour of the lower classes. In Lodi's work however, the moral comment is not stressed, though we are left in no doubt that these boys are uneducated street children who have already learned adult vices. | Subjects: | everyday life; figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Lodi, Gaetano (Italian painter, decorator, 1830-1886) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8411... | Go to resource |
