Description: | This work is a copy of an engraving by T. Major, after David Teniers the Younger's painting of an alchemist. The subject of alchemy was a popular one in the seventeenth century. Artist's such as Adriaen Brouwer and Adriaen van Ostade used the imagery to comment on the futility of the alchemist's search to turn base metals into gold; the futility of Man's search for the meaning of life. The imagery of alchemy was also used by artists as a subtle reference to the very nature of painting itself - the turning of raw materials in a dirty painter's studio into a beautiful, saleable object. | Subjects: | everyday life; interior; figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Teniers, David, II (Flemish painter, 1610-1690) Æ After | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8415... | Go to resource |
