Description: | A pupil of Luca Giordano, to whom this work was previously attributed, Paolo de' Matteis became an internationally renowned artist in his own right, working in Rome, Naples and Paris. Solomon was David's second son by Bathsheba, following the death of his first born. Solomon's great wisdom later in life was renowned, but here the artist has focused on one of the reasons stated for the decline of his Kingdom, his decadence, and increasing idol worship, though some sources state that rather than worship idols himself, he in fact turned a blind eye to the idol worship of his many wives. | Subjects: | religion (Solomon); figure; interior | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Matteis, Paolo de` (Italian painter, 1662-1728) Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to manner of Giordano, Luca (Italian painter, 1634-1705, active in Italy and Spain) Previously attributed to Giordano, Luca (Italian painter, 1634-1705, active in Italy and Spain) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8416... | Go to resource |
