Description: | Signed: yes Description: This work is typical of the oeuvre of the Belgian genre painter Edourd Woutermaertens. It demonstrates Woutermaetens' skill in his representation of the natural world. Trained for six years with the artist Louis Robbe, an animal painter, he specifically specialised in the painting of sheep. Though sheep carry obvious connotations of Christianity, here they merely create a picuresque subject matter, perhaps designed to heve been sold on the open market - paintings such as this were popular with nineteenth-century English collectors. | Subjects: | landscape; figure; animal (sheep; dog) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Woutermaertens, Edouard (French artist, 1819-1897) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8425... | Go to resource |
