Description: | This small portrait on metal is supposed to be Philippe II, Duc D'Orleans (1674-1723), who was Regent of France during the minority of Louis XV. It is more likely, though that it is in fact his father, Philip I (1640-1701), the brother of Louis XIV. Comparing images of the two men, the physical likeness of this work is much closer to father than to son. Philip I was also known for his flamboyant and effeminate mode of dress, which is reflected in the red silk scarf worn by the sitter here. The blue sash indicates the Royal French Order of the Holy Ghost, and he wears a suit of armour, which reflects the great success Philippe I had on the field of battle. | Subjects: | portrait (Philippe Duc D'Orleans) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Robert (French artist, active late 17th century) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8456... | Go to resource |
