Description: | The Russell-Cotes portrait of Bertie Norreys, attributed to Peter Lely, is based on the composition of the artist's famous image of Sir Thomas Isham (c. 1670), suggesting a possible date for the painting. Little is known of the sitter other than that he died at Padua in Italy, presumably while on the Grand Tour. He is shown turned and pointing to the left. His bloated features reveal a certain weakness of character, while his dress helps to enhance his noble status. He wears a long dark wig typical of the period and a white lace cravat over a brown silk over-robe embroidered with silver and gold floral motifs. Behind him an open window reveals a glimpse of trees and a stormy sky. The painting is contained within a fine seventeenth-century British frame carved with a combination of classicising elements and auricular mouldings. | Subjects: | Bertie) portrait (Norreys | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Lely, Peter (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1618-1680, active in England) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8468... | Go to resource |
