Description: | This is a miniature copy in oil on canvas by the Scottish portrait painter William Nicholson (1781-1844) after an Old Master painting depicting the Virgin and Child. The Child, on the Virgin's lap, is looking at her. An angel hovers above. Nicholson made over 100 small sketches in oil on canvas after Old Masters, which he collated in an album. For Nicholson, an almost entirely self-taught artist, the close study of works of art in private and public galleries was an essential part of his training. The original of this copy remains to be identified. Nicholson recorded it as 'painted by Correggio'. | Subjects: | religion | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Nicholson, William (British artist, 1781-1844) Æ After Correggio, Francesco (Italian artist, active 17th) After Italian School | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8475... | Go to resource |
