Description: | The subject of St Francis meditating with a skull recalls well-known compositions by leading Baroque artists, such as Caravaggio's St Francis (about 1606, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome) and Zurbáran's St Francis in Meditation (about 1635, National Gallery, London). The unknown artist who painted this image of St Francis with an angel was certainly referring to this Baroque tradition. However, it is possible that the artist was working at a much later date than Caravaggio and Zurbáran, as the smooth, sloping profiles of St Francis and the angel suggest the neoclassical style favoured at the end of the eighteenth century. | Subjects: | angel) religion (St Francis | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: French School Æ Attributed to Attributed to Italian School Previously attributed to Italian School | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8483... | Go to resource |
