Description: | Signed: yes Description: A cartoon by the German artist Hans Holbein, depicting King Henry VIII presenting the Charter of the Incorporation to the Company of Barber-Surgeons whose members surround him. It was commissioned to mark the occasion of the joining of the Barbers and the Surgeons Company in 1541. The original panel painting survives at the Hall of the Barber-Surgeons Company, Monkwell Street, Cheapside. The cartoon is truer to Holbein's intentions and is different to the painting which is believed to have been completed by Holbein's assistants and then destroyed in part by fire. The cartoon was at one time believed to be a copy made for King James I. | Subjects: | Edmund; Monforde N.); figure; still life; history (King Henry VIII presenting the Charter of the Incorporation) portrait (Butts Dr John; Henry VIII Sir William; Chambers James; Pen Sir N.?; Harman King; Vicary John; Alcock Sir John; Symson/Simpson Thomas; Ayleff | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Holbein, Hans, the younger (German painter, draftsman, born 1497 or 1498, died 1543, active in Switzerland and England) Æ Previously attributed to after | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8486... | Go to resource |
