Description: | The attribution of this painting to Ribera is doubtful. The brushwork and draughtsmanship do not share his expressive sensitivity. Nonetheless, the naturalist treatment of the subject as well as the chiaroscuro effect (extreme contrasts of light and dark) in the use of light are reminiscent of his paintings. The work was probably painted by one of his followers, for example Francesco Francanzano, a member of Ribera's workshop whose paintings are comparable to this one. | Subjects: | figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Fracanzano, Francesco (Italian painter, 1612-1656) Æ Attributed to circle of Previously attributed to Ribera, Jusepe de (Spanish painter and printmaker, baptized in 1591, died 1652, active in Italy) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8503... | Go to resource |
