Description: | The saint depicted in this painting is the Christian martyr St Catherine. She was highly popular in devotional imagery and this panel was probably part of an altarpiece. The saint was said to have converted fifty philosophers who had been sent by a Roman Emperor to dissuade her from her Christian faith. Here, the book alludes to her wisdom and learning while her sword indicates the manner of her eventual execution. Behind her a circular stone ledge makes a subtle reference to the wooden wheel designed for her torture, miraculously destroyed by a thunderbolt before it could be used. | Subjects: | religion (St Catherine) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: German School Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8504... | Go to resource |
