Description: | The painting describes a farmyard, with sheep flocking in through the gate on the left, whilst a shepherdess watches. Two figures are seated near a pile of boulders in front of the wall in the central foreground. The sketchy and fluid brushwork describes the farm realistically, exposing areas where whitewash has flaked, and revealing a disintegrating thatched roof. The earlier attribution to Barbizon artist Charles Emile Jacque, a superb animal painter, is doubtful. The work lacks the atmosphere and warmth associated with Jacque's oeuvre. The depiction of sheep and figures is weak in comparison to authentic work | Subjects: | figure; animal (sheep); buildings and gardens | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Jacque, Charles Émile (French painter, illustrator, and printmaker, 1813-1894) Æ School of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8510... | Go to resource |
