Description: | This is a copy of Leonardo da Vinci's original on which he was working in 1501, following a commission from Florimond Robertet, secretary to Louis XII of France. Several copies of the painting exist, notable examples being that stolen in 2003 from the Duke of Buccleuch, Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfriesshire, dated between 1500 and 1519, and another in a private collection in New York (previously Henry 3rd Marquis of Lansdowne from 1809) which is dated c.1516 and was in England for most of the nineteenth century. Therefore, if this painting is a nineteenth century copy, it is likely to be an English copy taken from the version now in a New York private collection. The composition of the figures is usually the same in all versions, but the background details can vary from waterfalls to castles, forest to lakes and can even include figure groups. The subject foreshadows the Passion of Christ, with the infant Jesus grasping a yarnwinder and holding it up so that it resembles the cross. | Subjects: | religion (Virgin and Child) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Leonardo da Vinci (Italian painter, draftsman, scientist, 1452-1519) Æ After | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8511... | Go to resource |
