Description: | The Troika and the Cart are winter and summer scenes of a type popular in nineteenthth century Russia, based on the imagery of typical everyday Russian life. Lithographs and drawings of such themes by Aleksandr Orlovsky (1777-1832), a Polish artist who from 1802 worked in St Petersburg, were in high demand and were copied widely, both in Russia and abroad. In the latter half of the nineteenth century they functioned as models for lacquer miniatures and paintings. The two winter and summer troikas in the Paisley collection seem based on Orlovsky's images. Although no attribution can be made, the technique of the two paintings, the metal support, and simple compositions, places them in the later nineteenth century when a fusion took place between Russian professional painting and the methods and imagery of traditional Russian folk art. | Subjects: | everyday life; figure; animal | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Russian School Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8514... | Go to resource |
