Description: | Signed: yes Description: The sunset is a subject Daubigny depicted over the years in various versions. A precursor of the Impressionists and a member of the Barbizon group of artists, Daubigny mastered the technique of working outdoors, (en plein air). This small size panel has been rapidly painted using earth colours and showing the master's pre-occupation with changing atmospheric effects. Daubigny often used small size panels for open-air work, especially after he purchased his famous studio boat, Botin', that enabled him to integrate into the world of rivers and streams, giving him a new angle of vision for his paintings. The overall effect of this painting can be described in the artist and critic's Zacharie Astruc words: 'the painter of simple impressions ..tender ..sweet ..captivating'. | Subjects: | landscape | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Daubigny, Charles François (French landscapist, 1817-1878) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8518... | Go to resource |
