Description: | Signed: yes Description: A French painter of Spanish parenthood, Diaz de la Peña was a largely self-taught artist who became a leading member of the Barbizon group and explored the technique of painting en plein air (painting outdoors). However, in the early part of his career, he also painted romantic scenes deriving from mythological sources, resulting in sentimental idyllic pictures with bathers and odalisques. This painting of semi-nude female figures, characterised by dramatic expressions of despair and grief, comes from the early part of his career before he embarked on his landscapes that brought him fame and fortune in the 1860s. The actions of the maidens denote grief at the departure of Cupid to the left who wings his flight through an opening in the trees. | Subjects: | figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Diaz de la Peña, Narcisse Virgile (French painter and printmaker, 1808-1876) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8519... | Go to resource |
