Description: | The subject of this large portrait is Lord Howard of Effingham, Knight of the Garter and Lord High Admiral of England under Queen Elizabeth I. It was Effingham who commanded the fleet which destroyed the Spanish Armada. He succeeded his father as second Baron Effingham in 1593. This portrait depicts Lord Howard in Garter robes and the Order's badge, standing against a seascape.
