Description: | Signed: yes Description: This small work was once thought to be a self-portrait of the French artist Nicolas de Largillière. Largillière enjoyed considerable success as an historical painter in his homeland, having spent some of his youth in London, working as an assistant to the portrait painter Peter Lely. The subject of Largillière's portrait, however, is the Flemish landscape painter Jan Siberechts who, like Largillière, trained in Antwerp. He also worked in England before his death in 1703, producing landscapes and panoramic views for wealthy clients. This portrait depicts Siberechts with brushes and palette in hand and, far from idealising, reveals the artist's hare lip. | Subjects: | Jan) portrait (Siberechts | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Largillière, Nicolas de (French painter and draftsman, 1656-1746) Æ Previously attributed to Siberechts, Jan (Flemish painter, 1627-ca. 1703, active in England) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8522... | Go to resource |
