Description: | This image of the Virgin and Child with Saint Catherine is the central and only extant panel of a triptych, which was probably painted for private devotional use. Saint Catherine is shown holding a pear, one of her attributes as the mystical bride of Christ. The crisp detail and stylised idiom of the painting, as well as the still life on top of the ledge in the foreground, are characteristic of the work of Jan Mertens. The receding hilly landscape in the background is a hallmark feature of paintings of the Netherlandish school. | Subjects: | figure; townscape; landscape; religion (Virgin and Child St Catherine) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Mertens, Jan (Netherlandish artist, active ca. 1473-1509) Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to Master of 1518 (early Netherlandish painter, 16th c.) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8543... | Go to resource |
