Description: | Religious orders were keen on commissioning allegorical representations in which the institution is exalted by showing its founder or a prominent member receiving a special favour from Christ or the Virgin. This painting represents the enthroned Virgin giving the standard of San Sepolcro convent to Saint Bonaventure. On the right, Saint Paul looks on the scene; the balding saint in a yellow robe could be Saint Peter. On the lower right a putto is shown holding a cardinal's hat, which Saint Bonaventure had humbly rejected. This is a ricordo after Solimena's larger altarpiece at the cathedral of Aversa. | Subjects: | St Bonaventure figure; religion (St Paul Virgin); interior St Peter? | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Solimena, Francesco (Italian painter and draftsman, 1657-1747) Æ After Attributed to studio of Solimena, Francesco (Italian painter and draftsman, 1657-1747) Attributed to Mura, Francesco de (Italian painter, 1696-1782) Previously attributed to Solimena, Francesco (Italian painter and draftsman, 1657-1747) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8543... | Go to resource |
