Description: | This grand picture portrays a figure which is thought to be St Mary Magdalene. According to apocryphal sources, the Magdalene received her last communion from angels. The artist has shown her half-clothed, as is usual, and kneeling to receive the wafer from an angel, with a cloud of putti observing the moment overhead. By Mary Magdalene's feet are painted a skull and book, similar attributes to St Jerome, also to denote a life of repentance and devotion. The event is set in a wooded landscape. | Subjects: | religion (Mary Magdalene) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Italian (Bolognese) School Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to Trevisani, Francesco (Italian painter, 1656-1746) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8545... | Go to resource |
