Description: | Signed: yes Description: This portrait of a bewigged gentleman was painted in 1689 by the Dutch artist Nicholas Maes. A native of Dordrecht, as a young man Maes went to Amsterdam where he worked alongside Rembrandt. He established his name as a painter of everyday-life and history subjects, and had considerable influence on Johannes Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch. From 1660 until his death in 1689, Maes devoted himself almost entirely to portraiture, and was very prolific. This late example employs a format which Maes often adopted, where the subject is portrayed three-quarter length against a landscape background. | Subjects: | figure; landscape | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Maes, Nicolaes (Dutch painter, 1634-1693) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8552... | Go to resource |
