Description: | Henri Gascard (about 1635-1701), or Gascar, was a French portraitist who came to England in about 1672. He was patronised at court by Charles II's French mistress, Louise de Kéroualle, and in turn by the pro-French faction, becoming a rival to the king's official painter, Peter Lely. This portrait was formerly thought to be of Nell Gwyn by John Michael Wright. It is, however, typical of Gascard's portraiture executed while he was working in England. The unknown sitter was probably painted to commemorate her wedding. | Subjects: | portrait | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Gascard, Henri (French painter, 1634 or 1635-1701) Æ Previously attributed to Wright, John Michael (English painter, 1617-1694) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8565... | Go to resource |
