Description: | This portrait of Louise de Kéroualle (1649-1734) is a copy of a picture by Peter Lely, Charles II's Principal Painter. Portrayed in the guise of St Agnes, the patron of young brides, she is shown feeding a lamb, the saint's attribute, while holding a martyr's palm in her other hand. The orange blossom behind her left shoulder alludes to pregnancy. The portrait was probably commissioned around the time of her mock marriage to Charles II in 1670, nine months before she gave birth to the king's son. She was the king's official mistress from then until his death in 1685. | Subjects: | animal (sheep); allegory (St Agnes); portrait (Louise de Kéroualle); landscape | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Lely, Peter (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1618-1680, active in England) Æ After Previously attributed to Lely, Peter (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1618-1680, active in England) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8570... | Go to resource |
