Description: | Charles I (1600-1649) was the son of James VI and I and his wife Anne of Denmark. He succeeded as king in 1625, but his disagreements with the English parliament lead to the Civil War and his eventual defeat and execution. This portrait, within a painted oval, shows the king in armour, wearing the Lesser George badge of the Order of the Garter suspended from a chain around his neck. The original Van Dyck portrait, of which this painting is a version, was painted around 1638, and shows the king full-length (State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg). Ironically, this much-copied and popular image shows the monarch as a great military leader. | Subjects: | portrait (King Charles I) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Dyck, Anthony van (Flemish painter, 1599-1641, active in England) Æ Circle of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8577... | Go to resource |
