Description: | Signed: yes Description: This portrait dated 1661 was previously thought to be by an artist in the circle of Peter Lely (1618-1680), but the style of painting and the signature 'LS' in monogram, suggest the author is L. Schuneman, a German painter who worked in Scotland in the later seventeenth century. Although the sitter is unknown, he is probably a member of the aristocracy or gentry, as he is depicted in fashionable but informal clothes. He might also be in mourning, because of the black mantle he has wrapped around himself and the prominence of the black ribbon tied in a bow at this neck. | Subjects: | portrait | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Schuneman, L.
